MB RANTS # 10

As much as I love his role as Javert in the 2019 staged concert of Les Mis, I just couldn't take him seriously because he's just like an angry teddy bear with dimples pursuing Jean Valjean. Not until the robbery scene and he showed up to intervene. And I was like, "Yeah, he's Javert and Marius no more."

And his take of Javert's suicide scene just blown me away. Wow, this guy never stops to surprise me.

Les Mis has been one of my favorite musicals for twelve years and after all this time I still maintain that Javert should be in the finale along with all the others who've died, and furthermore, the fact that he's not is actively antithetical to the themes of the show.

this is a very "in this essay I will" kind of take, I know, but seriously. Javert does choose to save Marius and let Valjean go in the end. He gets a reprise of Valjean's changing-his-mind-about-the-world song. Why is his redemption invalidated in the end? Because he kills himself? Valjean isn't perfect even after his redemption (e.g., what happened with Fantine, his secrecy with Cosette), but the narrative doesn't punish him in the end for his mistakes. And the barricade boys also threw their lives away — for a cause, yes, but they chose to stay and die even after the point at which they knew it wouldn't change anything.

Anyway. All this to say, I am desperate for a production of Les Mis in which, during the finale, Javert pushes through from the back of the crowd, police coat and hat gone. He and Valjean stare at each other for a beat or two, and then Javert bows to him, stiffly but genuinely. Valjean claps him on the shoulder, and he melts back into the crowd and joins the final chorus.

The Thernadiers can stay in hell though.

Hsjwzgkwhsks this couldn't get out of my head and has been in the works quite some time. There will be a part 2 of this! Wich will probably look better because I'm not that happy with the way i drew Valjean in this one lmao.
